Joyce A. Stuermer

Joyce A. Stuermer, 82, of Hiawatha, KS, died unexpectedly Friday, October 5, 2012 at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka KS.
She is survived by a brother-in-law, Harold Elliott, nephew Howard (Lori) Elliott and niece Jean (Ray) Brintnall, of Hiawatha as well as great-nieces and nephews and many friends.
Joyce was born September 26, 1930, in Kansas City, Kansas, one of three daughters of John H. and K. Louise Ellis Stuermer. Attending schools in the Stony Point and Muncie areas, she graduated from Turner High School in 1948. After graduating from Ottawa University in 1952, she began a life-long career involvement with music as an educator and administrator. Beginning in Sabetha, KS, her early career as a vocal instructor included other locations of Davis, CA, Kansas City, MO and Garnett, KS before joining the faculty of Ottawa University (1971-1977). After serving as the Director of Cultural Arts for the Kansas City MO Parks and Recreation she finished her official career at Ottawa University, (1989-1996). However, after retiring, she continued to give voice lessons to adults and kids until her death.
Joyce was always an active church member since childhood, attending and joining churches in each community she lived. Currently she was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, KS but she retained ties and fond memories of all her church homes.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Winona Stuermer, in infancy, and Norma Elliott.
A Celebration of Life for Joyce will be held at Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha, Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 10:30. Friends may call at the church an hour before the service. Inurnment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas.
