Powhattan, KS    Alvin R. Wenger, of rural Powhattan, died November 4, 2023, at Medicalodges of Jackson County at Holton, at age of 96.

Alvin was born at home on the family farm near Powhattan, April 5, 1927, the son of Ernest and Ethel Warner Wenger.  Alvin had twin sisters, Loraine and Lorene, 10 years his senior, both now deceased.  During high school, he received the Union Pacific Scholarship.

He farmed with his father and joined the US Navy when he was 18 serving on a minesweeper Gladiator in the Pacific during World War II.  He returned home to continue to farm with his father, and in later years, his son Ronald.

Alvin married Pauline J. Wolfley, April 7, 1948.  They enjoyed traveling through the years including to New York City, and for their 60th wedding anniversary, to Alaska. They had a happy marriage and he will be remembered as a good man.  She preceded him in death May 11, 2012.

He's survived by a daughter Nancy (Jon) Mitchell of Lenexa, Kansas, a son Ronald D. Wenger of the home; grand-daughters: Elizabeth (David) Oberle of Keller, Texas, and Pamela (Todd) McDonald of Luxembourg; great-grandchildren:  Audrey, Isaac, Gabriel, and Cressida.

Alvin was a member of the Church of the Brethren; and Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion.  He and several Powhattan area farmers helped to organize what became known as the Powhattan Co-op and served on the board of directors for many years.  Alvin and Ron built his home by salvaging old schools and barn.  He enjoyed bowling and attending the Wenger Family Reunion held every year.

His lifelong friend James Steinbrink was a pilot.  Alvin, at the age of 79, started taking flying lessons.  When asked he said "He wasn't getting any younger"!

He will be missed!

Services are planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023 , at Powhattan United Methodist Church.  Shane Spangler will officiate.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday, November 20 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at Church.  Military honors a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
