Darlene Grace (Maguire) Scarbrough passed away on Saturday January 18, 2025.  Darlene was born on May 5, 1932, in Robinson, Kansas, to John and Grace Maguire.  She lived on her parents' farm near Robinson for most of her childhood, until her parents divorced when Darlene was a teen-ager. Then, she and her mother moved to Hiawatha, Kansas, where Darlene graduated from high school in 1950.  While she was in high school, she began dating Delwin Scarbrough, and they were married on December 26, 1950, in Hiawatha. In the early years of their marriage, Darlene and Delwin lived in Winona, Kansas; Seneca, Kansas, Reserve, Kansas,; and Effingham, Kansas, where Delwin taught. They eventually settled back in Hiawatha, where Delwin taught math for many years, until he retired in 1987.

Darlene was a devoted housewife and mother and enjoyed singing in the First Methodist Church choir, singing in performances by the local Music Club, playing in the church handbell choir, biking, gardening, knitting afghans, reading, and spending time with many close friends.

Darlene was very involved in her children's school activities and attended or chaperoned many school events and sports. Later in life, when Delwin had retired,

Darlene and Delwin loved to take car trips to Colorado, Branson, New York City, and Texas.

Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Delwin, in 2014, and she is survived by her 4 children, Randy (Topeka), Kathi (Topeka), Rick (Hiawatha) and Cindy (Marysville).

In her final days, Darlene loved hearing from lifelong friends and spending time with her children. She has requested no funeral service; instead, the family will have a graveside service, and Darlene will be buried in Mount Hope Cemetery beside Delwin.

In honor of Darlene's memory, a fund has been established, with designation to Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, where both Darlene and Delwin received outstanding, compassionate, and professional care. Contributions can be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral home in Hiawatha.
