Everest, Kansas.........

Harold Eugene Lane was born on November 3, 1938, to Eleanor Lee and Harold Marshall Lane on Sycamore Street in Iola, Kansas. He went home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2025.

Harold attended Iola schools and graduated from high school in 1956. At the age of 18, he entered the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for four years. After completing his military service, he returned to Kansas City and worked at the Clark Service Station for three years. He later moved back to Iola to work for Bud White Motors, before beginning a long career with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) in 1967.

After just two years, Harold was promoted to Highway Maintenance Foreman in Columbus, KS. He was then promoted to the position of Superintendent in Horton, Kansas area, where he was responsible for overseeing a span of 425 miles. He worked in the Horton office for 33 years, bringing his total service with KDOT to 38 years.

In addition to his work with KDOT, Harold served in the Army National Guard for 27 years. He retired with the distinguished rank of Top First Sergeant, earning the respect and admiration of the young soldiers he mentored and led.

Harold was first united in marriage to Grace Ambler, with whom he had six children. He later married Janice Ambler, his partner in life, and they remained together until his passing.

Harold had a deep love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing with his buddies at his favorite fishing hole—a special place where he found peace and clarity. He was a dedicated servant of his faith, serving as a deacon for over 50 years at the Second Baptist Church in Iola and later at the Second Baptist Church in Hiawatha.

He was an active member of the Lions Club in Everest, Kansas, and a proud member of the Golden Square Masonic Lodge #71. Harold also served for many years on the Everest Housing Board, always looking for ways to give back to his community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold M. and Eleanor Lane, and Teola Lane; his son, Harold E. Lane Jr.; and his daughter, Carolyn C. Lane.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Janice Lane, of the home. He is also survived by his children: Cynthia Harris of Kansas City, MO; Cheryl (Leo) Gardiner of Garland, TX; Carmella Lane of Kansas City, MO; H. Fred (Denise) Lane of Lee's Summit, MO; Cassandra (Doug) Hale of Chanute, KS; and Charlotte Ambler of Everest, KS. Also survived by his siblings Helen Rogers of Iola, KS; Walsie Harris of Youngstown, OH; Gary (Ella) Lane of Kansas City, KS.

Harold was a proud grandfather to 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A celebration of Harold's Eternal Life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Eternal Hope Worship Center, Hiawatha, with Michael Kelley officiating.  Military honors will be a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Graveside services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, September 27, at the Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas, with military honors a courtesy of the American Legion/VFW of Iola.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Friday at Church.
