HOYT  –  James L. Hurd, 76, of Hoyt, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born September 27, 1946 at Fort Scott, the son of Charles Hurd, Jr. and Mary Katherine Harris Hurd.  He graduated from Girard High School.

James had worked at Goodyear Tire in Topeka for forty-two years and was a member of Steelworkers Local 307.

He married Sharon Kmiec.  They were divorced.  He later married Katherine Corwin and they were divorced.

James was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Hurd, and a nephew, Troy Philbrick.

Survivors include Sharon Gabriel, of the home, three sons, Michael Todd Hurd, Denver, Travis Scott Hurd (Kim), Topeka and Brandon Dion Hurd (Shannon), Gouldsboro, Maine; his siblings, Sharon Zibell (Bill Stolzenberger), Mayetta, Chuck Hurd, III (Diana), Topeka, Sue Philbrick, Wichita, and Sandy Halloran and Sheila Compton, both of Topeka; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 20 ^th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt.  Family and friends will meet from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in the Hoyt Cemetery.  James will lie in state from Noon until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Heart of Jackson Humane Society, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
