Mary Kern Schlegel was born May 19, 1942 in Sabetha, KS, to her parents Donald and Mary Kern and her older sister Kathleen (Kern) Hanson.

She lived on the family farm for many years and went to school in Hamlin, KS. The family then moved to Hiawatha, KS, where her parents stayed until their passing.  She moved to Kansas City and her sister moved to Lindsborg, KS, with her husband Douglas Hanson.

In KC she went to business college and then started working for the University of Kansas Medical Center in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department as an administrative assistant.  She continued to work for KUMC until she retired after fifty years of service to the department while ending her career as the assistant to the department head.

During her time in KC, she met her husband, George Schlegel, and had her son Matthew in 1980.  Her husband passed away in 2021 after a long battle with heart disease and she passed away August 18th at the Kansas City Hospice House after a short battle with lung cancer.

She is survived by her son, Matthew, and his girlfriend, Jennifer Etheridge.

A private family inurnment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, was held September 4, 2023.
