Maurene Joyce Barnes, 93, of Onaga, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023 at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness.

She was born March 30, 1930 at Soldier, the daughter of Walter and Opal (Beach) Biester.

Maurene had worked at the dress factory, as a kitchen aide and nurses aide at the nursing home, and had groomed dogs at the Onaga Animal Clinic, all in Onaga.

She married Dale Barnes on November 15, 1948 in Arkansas.  He preceded her in death on July 23, 2008.

Maurene was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kenneth W. Barnes, who died in 2020, and a sister Sharon Williams.

Survivors include her son, Raynard Barnes, of Topeka; a daughter, Gail Brenner, of Soldier; grandsons, Cole W. Barnes (Paige) and Wyatt W. Barnes (Marilyn) of Lawrence; granddaughters Nicki Curtis (Brian) of Holton, and Brandi (Matt) Fritz and Kyli Brenner (Chris), of Soldier.  Great-grandchildren Erin and Brock Curtis; Xavier, Emirson, and Brandin Fritz; Riley, Tyler Brenner-Kraushaar, and Kolten Brenner; and a sister Helen Hower of Kansas City.

Per Maurene's request a private burial service will be held at a later date in the Soldier Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Redbud Plaza at Community Health Care System, Onaga, KS and may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, PO Box 312, Onaga, KS 66521.
