ONAGA – Phyllis Mae Lewis, 95, of Onaga, died Thursday, October 20, 2022 at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born October 1, 1927 at Bancroft, KS the daughter of Joseph Ernest and Evelyn Marie Richmond Porter.  She graduated from Onaga High School in 1945.

Phyllis worked in several different cafes, the Slimaker Dress Factory and had cooked at the Onaga school for 22 years.

She was a member of the First Congregational UCC in Onaga.

Phyllis married John H. Lewis on May 29, 1946 in Topeka.  He died October 17, 2007.

Her father died when she was only five months and five days old.  She was raised by her mother Evelyn and step-father Bert Handley.  They preceded her in death along with a half-brother, Dale "Tex" Handley, a half-sister, Judy Spurlock, a step-brother, Clarence "Bud" Handley and two step-sisters, Gladys Gillenwater and Lucile Armstrong.

Survivors include a son, Bob Lewis and wife Pam, Frisco, TX; a half-brother, Melvin "Tobe" Handley, Onaga; one grandson, Chris Lewis, his wife Julie and their children, Brady John, Austin Christopher and Sydney Paige Lewis, of Lewisville, TX.

Calling hours for Phyllis will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 24 ^th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga.  Private family burial will be in the Onaga Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Onaga Historical Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 312, Onaga, KS  66521.
